Huangshan is the mountain in every Chinese landscape painting: granite spires, twisted pines, and a sea of cloud below the peaks on the right morning. In the valleys around it are the white-walled Hui villages of Hongcun and Xidi. A guide plans the cable cars and the walking so that you see the sunrise without the 4 a.m. queue, and gets you to the villages when the day trippers have gone.
